South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss today pressed the Department for Transport on the upgrade of the Ely North Junction – a key rail junction on the East Anglian network which needs to be upgraded in order to facilitate increased services on the Downham and Thetford routes as well as cross country and freight services. In a letter to the Rail Minister Clair Perry, Elizabeth asked for a meeting to discuss the progression of the works. Just prior to the 2015 election, the Department for Transport requested a review of all works scheduled for control period 5 (2015-2019). Previously it had been anticipated that the works would be completed by 2017.
Elizabeth Truss MP commented ‘Upgrading the Ely North junction will allow for half hourly services on the Downham Market route and increased services on the Thetford line. Cross country and freight services also significantly benefit from this vital upgrade and I am keen to ensure the timetable is kept on track. I understand that just prior to the election the Department for Transport instigated a review of all works in the CP5 schedule and I want reassurance that this will not create delays on the key rail routes in our region. This is an issue I have been campaigning for over the last four years and I have asked for a meeting with the Rail Minister Claire Perry. With rail passenger numbers increasing each year, the economic value of the upgrade to my South West Norfolk constituency and the county as a whole is absolutely clear and this is the message I will continue to make to the Department for Transport .’
Attached below letter to Transport Minister Claire Perry, Department for Transport.

Dear Claire – One of my major campaigns of the last parliament has been pressing for the upgrade of the Ely North Junction – a key rail junction on the East Anglian rail network which once the upgrade is completed will facilitate half hourly train services on the Downham Market and Thetford routes as well as improved cross country and freight services. Just prior to the election, I understand that the Department for Transport instigated a review of all works in CP5. Consideration is currently being given to the road layout at the junction and I am keen to ensure the work progresses as quickly as possible. The original target for the upgrade to be completed was 2017 however concerns have been raised that this timetable may not be met. With passenger numbers increasing and the economic boost that rail routes generate, I would be extremely grateful if I could arrange a meeting with you to discuss the value of the works programme and timetable for implementation.
