The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, today announced that the ports of Felixstowe and Harwich have been successful in their bid to become one of eight new freeports. Last month South West Norfolk MP Liz Truss joined colleagues from across the region to launch the Freeport East bid. The other seven regions selected as freeports are East Midlands Airport, Humber, Liverpool City Region, Plymouth, Solent, Thames and Teeside. Freeports will be special economic zones which amongst other benefits include simpler planning processes, lower taxes and improved transportation.
Liz Truss MP said ‘Today’s announcement that Felixstowe and Harwich have secured freeport status is great news. I supported colleagues in lobbying for this and it will be a fantastic boost for East Anglia driving forward investment, economic prosperity and jobs for the region.’
