Candidates press for improvements at key rail crossing

The need to keep on track with the upgrade at Ely North junction was very much the message given today by Conservative Party candidates Elizabeth Truss and Lucy Frazer.

South West Norfolk Conservative party candidate and Secretary of State for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Elizabeth Truss joined South East Cambridgeshire Conservative Party candidate Lucy Frazer at Ely to ensure that the measures required to improve the Ely North junction are being implemented. Improvements to Ely North will enable more frequent services on the Kings Lynn / Downham Market to London Kings Cross line, and the Thetford line. Elizabeth has been pressing Network rail for the upgrade since 2011 and funding was allocated in control period 5, 2014-2018 however the need to find a technical solution to accommodate road users at the crossing might cause a delay to the works.

Elizabeth commented “I held a meeting with Network Rail last month to discuss the upgrade of Ely North. There are additional challenges with the upgrade in relation to the road crossing. Network Rail are working with the various authorities to find a suitable solution however I am very keen to ensure this remains on track and that there is no slippage in the timetable of works. Working with Lucy Frazer and other key partners, every support will be given to ensure this can progress as soon as possible. Ely North is such a key junction for passenger and freight transport that it is vital any delays are kept to the absolute minimum.”

Lucy Frazer said “It is essential that the work to improve the Ely North junction is progressed as soon as possible. I have already worked with Jim Paice to press Network Rail to keep to their timetable.  It is important that the project is not delayed.”
