Elizabeth's Monthly Report May 2014

The forty-third monthly report from Elizabeth Truss MP updating residents on her activities.
 

Elizabeth and North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham held a flood summit in Downham Market to address local concerns about the winter flooding in the area, the maintenance of river networks and the flooding of Welney Causeway. They were joined by local Internal Drainage Boards, Norfolk County Council, Councillors, the Environment Agency and the head of flooding from the Department for the Environment. Norfolk County Councilpresented a £1.1m proposal to raise the Welney Causeway. Elizabeth and Henry Bellingham supported these plans and are putting the case for funding to DEFRA.
Elizabeth was delighted that the Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond MP, has confirmed that the new Lightning II F-35 jets will be on the tarmac at RAF Marham in 2018.
 
She is also pleased that BAE Systems has signed a contract with the MoD to deliver engineering support to the Tornado Fleet at RAF Marham until the aircraft go out of service.
Elizabeth met Tim Edmunds, Highways Network Manager at Norfolk County Council, with local councillors to discuss improving traffic flow in Thetford and to press for changes to the route hierarchy in Norfolk to reduce the impact of HGV traffic in Southery.

Elizabeth visited the ‘Saturday School’ at Downham Market Academy for students who were preparing for their exams. She also met senior staff during a visit to the Iceni Academy in Methwold. Elizabeth visited a Google Code Clubat Upwell Primary School, and met teachers and pupils as they created programmes.
 
Elizabeth welcomed the news that St Martin at Shouldham CEVA Primary School has converted to Academy status.
 
As Education Minister Elizabeth launched the Your Life campaign, which encourages more young people to study maths and science A Levels, with Chancellor George Osborne.
Elizabeth opened the Swaffham Lions Art and Craft Exhibition, which showcased local works of art, including some by school students and members of the art club. She enjoyed a visit to the Laburnum Grove Residential Care Home in Thetford, where she met staff and residents. 

Elizabeth attended a meeting of Hilgay Parish Council and a meeting of West Walton Parish Council. She also met Thetford’s Town Clerk. 
Elizabeth has appeared in the Sun, the BBC, the Telegraph, the Guardian, the Daily Mail, the Lynn News, the Fenland Citizen and the Eastern Daily Press. She has written articles for the Spectator, the Swaffham and Watton Times and the Thetford and Brandon Times.
13th June - Elizabeth will be holding an open surgery at Garboldisham Village Hall (click for map). The surgery will run from 16.00 - 18.00 and will be split into two sessions:
  • 16.00 - 17.00
    An open discussion with questions from the floor to Elizabeth Truss MP, Cllr Marion Chapman Allen and Cllr Ellen Jolly.
     
  • 17.00 - 18.00
    Drop-in surgery for constituents. No appointment required.
