This is the thirty-second monthly report from Elizabeth Truss MP updating residents on her activities.
RAF Marham: The Secretary of State for Defence Philip Hammond MP came to RAF Marham to announce that the Lightening II Joint Strike Fighter will be based there. The Joint Strike Fighter is the most advanced jet in the world and is expected to arrive in 2018/2019. The base is now secure well into 2040, which will enable investment in housing, provide security for local schools and nurseries, and be a welcome boost for local businesses.
Local issues: Elizabeth visited the Welney Causeway with MEP Vicky Ford and local councillors to discuss future funding options for the road. She attended the RAF Marham Homecoming parade in Downham Market. She went to the launch of the Green Britain Centre at the Eco-Tech Visitor Centre in Swaffham. She met local businesses and Pete Waters to discuss Brecks tourism. After visiting World Horse Welfare, Elizabeth has written to Agriculture Minister David Heath MP to raise concerns about fly grazing.
Transport: Elizabeth met Transport Minister Simon Burns MP, with other Norfolk and Suffolk MPs, to discuss necessary extra works at the Ely North junction to enable half-hourly services between Norwich and Cambridge. She is also going to meet Network Rail about this issue.
Education: Elizabeth delivered the keynote speech at the Conference of the Heads of Departments of Mathematical Sciences in the UK at Birmingham University. She announced the extension of the Teach First Leadership Development Programme into the early years. She also announced an extra £25m to help boost number of pupils studying Further Maths A-level.
Meetings and Events: Elizabeth met Nick Daubney, leader of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk council, the University Council for the Education of Children and Dick Olver of BAE Systems. She attended the funeral of Lady Thatcher in St Paul’s Cathedral.
